(Beware: today's blog is a stream of consciousness one so it may not make a ton of sense.)
I heard a quote today that made me smile . . . "Valentine's Day is like herpes: just when you think its gone for good, it rears
its ugly head once more. No wonder some people prefer to call it VD."
Okay I'm not quite that jaded about Valentine's Day but I'm not a fan either. I've never had a real Valentine. And, yes, I'm the girl who watches sappy love stories by herself & cries on most VD's.
For 10 years I worked at a greeting card store. If ever you want to develop a distaste for Valentine's Day spend a few days before & a few days after working in a greeting card store. The days before are obviously busy & people get mean when it's busy but the days after -- well that is when you have the men & women who now have mates who are mad at that for forgetting/being too busy etc. on the day of & are now trying to make it up to their significant others. Ouch.
Most people who dislike Valentine's Day say it is a day for greeting card companies, chocolate producers, flower stores, & jewlery sellers to gauge consumers. They've become disenchanted with the superficial romance forced upon people on February 14th. On some level they're right.
And then there is always the assumption that there is something wrong with those of us who are not in a relationship that turns my stomach. I don't need one day a year to have it shoved in my face that I am alone. I have 365 (or, in the case of this year, 366) days to feel lonely. I'm well aware that I have no significant other. It's like Valentine's Day is the day for singles to feel especially bitter.
Then there's the flip side of the coin where people think it's a day to show our love & affection. I can honestly say that I hope those people enjoy the day thoroughly. Maybe, if I'm super lucky, I'll be one of those people who enjoys the day in the future.
Totally off top . . . February 14th is now one of my fave days of the year because it is the day my favourite little muchkin, Alex was born. This year she'll be 3!
